Breast Lump or Breast Mass or Fibroadenoma

Introduction

Breast lump or mass of breast are of two types:-

1. Benign (Non- Cancerous) Breast Lumps,

2. Malignant (Cancerous) lumps.

Fibro adenoma is common cause for a lump or swelling in young women, often between the ages of 15-35, solid lump may be single or multiple. Fibro adenoma are usually painless, and they probably arise due to hormonal changes in the breast. As a consequence, the lump may arise in an area of the breast where is already more generalised hormonal breast pain and tenderness giving the false impression that the lump is causing the pain. Since they are solid lumps fibro adenoma generally do not disappear, although during pregnancy they may undergo noticeable changes resulting in either their disappearance or their progressive enlargement.

A fibro adenoma is a very common benign (not cancer) breast swelling .Fibro adenomas often develop during puberty so are mostly found in young women, but they can occur in women of any age.
A fibro adenoma is usually felt as a lump in the breast which is smooth to the touch and moves easily under the skin. Fibro adenomas are usually painless, but sometimes they may feel tender or even painful, particularly just before a period.

Causes of fibro adenoma

It's not known what causes a fibro adenoma. It's thought that it probably occurs because of increased sensitivity to the hormone oestrogen. Breasts are made up of lobules (milk-producing glands) and ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple).

These are surrounded by glandular, fibrous and fatty tissue. This tissue gives breasts their size and shape. Fibro adenomas develop from a lobule. The glandular tissue and ducts grow over the lobule and form a solid lump.
